Monitoring and operational optimization Part of Esslingen is now CO2 neutral: Neue Weststadt

In a real-world laboratory, hydrogen is being tested as a storage medium for regenerative surplus electrical energy in the old railway goods depot in Esslingen. In the new, almost climate-neutral district known as “Neue Weststadt”, an innovative energy supply concept is being used whereby surplus power from fluctuating renewable energies is converted into hydrogen, stored and fed back into the electricity and gas grids again when needed. As a partner in INEM, the GU Faculty is playing its part in energy management with its research on the integrated energy management of heat, cooling, electricity and mobility in a way which benefits the system.

Centre for Sustainable Development Studies

Esslingen University of Applied Sciences considers itself to have a particular obligation towards the decade of Education for Sustainable Development and is setting up its own Centre for Sustainable Development Studies (SNE) as part of an IQF project. The SNE will integrate the issue of sustainable development into the curricula of all faculties. Furthermore, the primary objective is to carry out inter-faculty projects and final thesis projects which focus on sustainable development and to set up an in-house advanced training programme.

 

Documentation of measurement path data

One area of research is the setting up of a measurement box system to measure physical quantities in buildings.
This is a simple, autonomous system which provides a low-cost, practical and open way of recording measurement data. The measurement box system records data, in a similar way to building management systems, and visualises them locally for the user. The software required for this is already freely available as “open source” software or has been made freely accessible by way of publications.

Monitoring and building services optimisation of the Kreissparkasse savings bank, Göppingen

The building of the Kreissparkasse Göppingen

The new building for the Kreissparkasse savings bank in Göppingen is an office building which is characterised by its comfortable working environment and very low energy consumption. This is achieved by using heating and cooling systems which make do with only small temperature differences, so-called low exergy systems. New methods of monitoring and optimisation will ensure that low energy consumption values and comfortable room temperatures are actually achieved in practice. Computer-aided simulation methods, which are used to check selected control concepts, are also used for this purpose. In addition, the building will be certified according to the criteria of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (German Sustainable Building Council, DGNB).

Lileta

The LiLEta project at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences is researching innovative approaches to increasing the energy efficiency of university buildings. By combining sensor technology, heating and indoor climate data is recorded in order to identify optimisation potential through data analysis.
